Grapes

Grapes contain an enormous number of compounds that are uniquely nourishing, thus giving them a reputation as a food for convalescents. This aromatic fruit can prevent and help to treat any number of age-related conditions, from anemia and fatigue to arthritis, varicose veins and rheumatism.

Since the earliest times, grapes have been dried to make raisins. Dynamos of concentrated nutrients, raisins are full of fiber and are exceptionally high-energy food. They are also rich in the minerals iron, potassium, selenium and zinc. Selenium, in particular, is a very important anti-aging nutrient, offering protection from heart disease and boosting the immune system.

Selenium is good for the skin and is thought to help keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay. In folk medicine, grapes were used to purify the blood, clean the Digestive System and counter liver and kidney disorders.

Their high vita min C content means that they are helpful for mopping up harmful free radicals, and being high in both water and fiber, grapes are a great aid for detoxifying the skin, gut, kidneys and the liver.

Full of powerful antioxidants, including astringent tannins, flavonoids and anthocyanins, grapes help to prevent “bad” LDL cholesterol from oxidizing and blood from clotting, and strengthen capillaries, therefore protecting the heart and  the circulatory system.

Black grapes also contain quercetin, which helps to minimize inflammation, aiding the cardiovascular system further, as well as promoting healthy digestion. Grapes can help to stabilize immune response by moderating allergic reactions. They also contain cancer-preventing ellagic acid as well as resveratrol, which is found specifically in red grapes.

This compound, together with pterostilbene and saponins, aids heart health by reducing the risk of blood clots and relaxing blood vessels. When fitting in food before exercise is a problem, grapes provide a refreshing solution.

Grapes make an ideal pre-workout snack, as they are light, rich in quick-energy carbohydrate and easily digestible, and they replenish some of the fluid and minerals you’ll lose as you sweat. It helps if you can keep them in your pocket and nibble them as you go along.
